Playing collegiate soccer . . . this is a point that is pondered by every soccer player who dreams about playing at the collegiate level. At that exact moment, preparation needs to begin. The player must enhance his/her technical, tactical physical and psychological profile. This arrives from training and the realization that what I have done is not as important as what I must do. In college, a player is expected to perform at a level that will allow his/her team to conquer any situation. The college expects a finished product that only needs polish.
As a college coach, here are some hints to collegiate success for the possible college-bound player:
1. A fitness program that includes the following activities.
a. Strength training (weight lifting & resistance activities).
b. Speed training by (a sequence of ten 40 yard sprints).
c. Endurance training by (two mile run under twelve minutes).
2. Technical improvements. Focus on various individual activities. Play in small-sided games. Remember, you are not just a forward or defender. You need to be a total player.
3. Tactical awareness. Know different styles of play. Study soccer! Read tactical books and watch videos on tactics & teamwork. Played all field positions. This total look at the game will improve your knowledge and anticipation. Attend coaching sessions. Establish a soccer vocabulary. With strong & specific communication you are able to communicate with your team. Who is the best coach? The game is, play the game!
4. Attain the highest level of coaching available. Make sure they offer a program that is designed to meet your specific needs.
5. Play out of your comfort zone. Do not focus entirely on results. Be more concern on personal development. This will allow you to experience greater level of play. It will test you psychologically in handling pressure. You will develop from a youth to an adult.
6. Psychological building. Believe that you can. Will I be an impact player at the next level? Take honest inventory of your skills and design a plan to meet your goals. Live soccer!
7. Establish many feedback people. People who can assess and evaluate your performance and is aware of what it takes to succeed at the next level.
These are just a few suggestions that will allow for a positive transition if you aspire to reach the collegiate level. Remember, through hard work and preparation, the sky is the limit.
